Principles and Techniques of Triage Consulting in Hospital Emergency Medical Services

The Global Health Center (GHC) of Tuscany Region and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Albania organized the first training course on Principles and Techniques of Triage Consulting in Hospital Emergency Medical Service, held in Tirana on 28th & 29th June 2016.

This training course is one of the outputs of the activities envisaged within the project “Improvement of Emergency Medical Services in the Coastal Area (IEMSCA)” whose aim is to contribute to the efficiency and efficacy preparedness and response capacity of Hospitals Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) as part of the overall reform of the National Emergency Medical Services.

The course was inaugurated by Ilir Beqaj, Minister of Health of the Republic of Albania, Andrea Senatori, Italian Development Agency, Maria José Caldés Pinilla, Director of Global Health Center, Tuscany Region, Mojgan Azadegan, Pisa University Hospital. 30 the health professional took part at the event, trained by Marco Ruggeri, Careggi University Hospital, Maria Carola Martino, Pisa University Hospital and Arena Virga, Pisa University Hospital).

The project is implemented by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Albania with the technical assistance of the Global Health Center (GHC) of Tuscany Region and is co financed by the Italian-Albanian Debt for Development Swap Programme (IADSA) and the Tuscany Region. The IEMSCA project aims at improving the HEMS service to the coastal communities by enhancing the capabilities and capacitates of in Hospitals Emergency Medical Services unit in the five public hospitals of Shkodra, Lezhe, Durres, Vlore and Sarande and thus to preserve and to improve the health of the related population through the reduction of excess morbidity and mortality. The selection of hospitals along the Albanian coast as the target of the project is mainly due to the greatest necessities detected in this area, as these hospitals experience a dramatic increase of the demand for emergency services during the summer as the population of the area doubled for the arrival of seasonal population for the holiday period. This exceeds the ability of the in-hospital EMS to provide quality care within a reasonable time, resulting in HEMS overcrowding, patients suffering prolonged wait times, deteriorating levels of service, adverse patient outcomes.

Training course specific objective

To learn techniques and tools of triage consulting and emergency care within the first, most critical hour, of a patient’s arrival at the hospital;
To determine the priority of patients’ treatments based on the severity of their health condition.

Participants

30 health professionals (doctors and nurses) of the Hospitals Emergency Medical Services of the Shkodra, Lezhe, Durres, Vlore and Sarande hospitals
